Barnbrook was heavily involved in the creation of the record-breaking and widely heralded David Bowie Is exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Officially described as ‘artistic advisors’ to the curators, the studio helped define the philosophical and creative direction of the exhibition. The studio also designed the identity, print collateral, catalogue marketing and the ‘Berlin’ or Black & White Years section of the exhibition.

The central theme for all of this was the endlessly extendable phrase David Bowie Is (created by Paul Morley), which was used to explain the different facets of Bowie, with the present tense putting the exhibition firmly into the contemporary world showing his influence today. The phrases were used in a bold graphic form creating a striking branding identity that was used in off-site locations and merchandise.
