Art Basel: 2013–14

2013–14
Art Basel
Basel, Hong Kong, and Miami Beach

Art Basel, founded in 1970, has since grown to become the premier international art fair for modern and contemporary works. Hundreds of galleries from around the word exhibit at three annual shows in Hong Kong, Basel and Miami Beach.

At the end of 2012, in preparation for the launch of the inaugural Hong Kong show and with a new international outlook, Barnbrook were approached to take command of the Art Basel brand identity. It was important to acknowledge the rich design heritage of the past whilst also forging a new global path for the future.

The application of the brand identity is broad and wide ranging, covering everything from on-site signage and environmental graphics to show collateral, invites and tickets as well as advertising, posters, book design and merchandise – all for three international shows per year.

Across the first two years of working with Art Basel (2013-14), Barnbrook continued to evolve the brand by producing a series of engaging and unusual printed matter achieved through exhaustive research and close collaboration with experts in the fields of printing, finishing, book-binding and three dimensional design. Applications ranged from the traditional finishing techniques of embossing and spot-varnishing, to an unusual vacuum-formed book cover for the landmark edition of Unlimited. The on-site show design continued to evolve through large-scale supergraphics, exhibition-style didactic vinyls and animated installations.
