Diablo

Barnbrook Fonts adapted the typeface Exocet for the Diabolo computer game series. The series, developed by Blizzard Entertainment, is one of the most celebrated hack-and-slash role playing action games and the third instalment, Diabolo III is in the best selling games of all time.

The idea behind Exocet was to reveal the beauty of letterforms found in ancient Greek stone carving. Rather than revival or pastiche, the typeface aimed at a contemporary reinterpretation – to speak with these forms to the modern world.

The culture of ancient Greece has had a powerful effect on modern western culture, not least Greek mythology, concerning gods and heroes, and the nature of the world. It is perhaps some of this mythical dimension which makes Exocet a suitable adaption for the Sanctuary – the world of humans, angels, demons and monsters.

In adapting Exocet to Diablo, design features were emphasised and extra characters added. The typeface helps to define a distinctive and uniquely exciting game environment.
