David Bowie Is: The Black and White Years

2013
Victoria and Albert Museum
London

As part of the work for the David Bowie Is exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Barnbrook were asked to design The Black & White Years section that focusses on the albums Station To Station, Low, “Heroes” and Lodger. Known as The Berlin trilogy, (although recording took place in other places too). The design uses the Berlin U-Bahn as a metaphor for Bowie’s journey from the extreme difficulties he found himself in when he left Los Angeles, to a new creative level considered some of his most innovative and influential work. It also explores the myriad influences on Bowie in his time there, and what goes up to make up our own collective myths about Berlin. In addition to the design Barnbrook worked closely with 59 Productions to create the animation and film content. A longer blog about this project is available here.
